What Accommodation Saltcoats Visitors Can Expect Nearby

Saltcoats itself is a seaside town on the west coast of Scotland with a long beach front and an old harbour now used mostly by leisure boats. Most of the places to stay in Saltcoats are B&Bs, apartments and the caravans at Sandylands Holiday Park, out towards Stevenston. Sandylands is a popular choice if you want a park with an indoor pool. The self catering holiday homes here are different. They're houses and converted farm buildings a short drive away, with a kitchen to yourself. Every one comes with a hot tub.

None of them is a walk from Saltcoats. The nearest is a few miles out, so plan on having a car. Saltcoats train station and Stevenston station are both on the Ayrshire Coast Line, but you'll still want wheels once you're here.

Sizes run from a one bedroom hideaway to a huge house for a very large group, so there's a great fit for a couple or a big family gathering. A few are luxury homes with extra bathrooms. Some of the holiday homes are pet friendly, so use the dog filter above if a four-legged guest is coming. You can also filter by sleeps or bedrooms to narrow things down fast.

  • Count your bedrooms and bathrooms before you count your guests
  • Use the dog filter if you're bringing a pet
  • Check the sailing port and times first
  • Plan on a car for shops and pubs, plus ask about parking
  • Ask about arrival times if a crossing is part of your day

Choosing a property by group

  • Families: bedrooms first
  • Couples: smaller places with a tub
  • Large groups: start with the biggest houses

Families usually want bedrooms first and a quiet location second. Couples can go for the smaller places or a luxury home with two bathrooms and enjoy the surrounding area at their own pace. Large groups have fewer houses to choose from, so view the biggest ones first.

Which Village Should You Base Yourself In?

Self catering Ardrossan: closest to the ferry

If you want accommodation near the Arran ferry, start here. The harbour is about 4 minutes from Saltcoats centre by car and the Ardrossan holiday accommodation on this page sits just north of the town, closer to Saltcoats than any other property here. It's the sensible pick for an early sailing. Ardrossan South Beach, 3 minutes from Saltcoats centre, is a popular spot for a morning stroll.

Seamill and the villages north: beach and village life

Head north and the feel changes. Seamill is a quieter seaside village on the shore with West Kilbride just inland, each around 8 minutes from Saltcoats by car. They suit anyone who wants a beach nearby and an unhurried day, though not every house on this page is near the beach, so check before you book.

Dalry and Kilwinning: countryside and space

Inland, the holiday homes range from one bedroom places to the largest house on this page. Expect four to five miles to the middle of Saltcoats. Dalgarven Mill, 13 minutes from Saltcoats, is a watermill museum of Ayrshire country life and worth a visit on a rainy day, though it's closed on Mondays. This side is a family-friendly pick if you'd rather have fields than a promenade.

Is This a Good Base for the Arran Ferry?

Yes, with one caution. The crossing from Ardrossan to Brodick on the Isle of Arran takes about 55 minutes. Sailings move to Troon when the Ardrossan berth can't be used, which means a longer crossing and a 21 minute drive from Saltcoats. A longer spell at Troon has also been discussed while Ardrossan Harbour is redeveloped, with no firm dates at the time of writing. Check the CalMac service status page for the port in use before you plan your morning.

Taking the car over? CalMac asks vehicles to check in 30 minutes before departure and foot passengers 10 minutes before.

Where Else Can You Go Along the Coast?

North to Largs

Largs, on the Firth of Clyde, is 22 minutes north of Saltcoats and makes a fine seaside day out, with our guide to accommodation in Largs covering stays there.

South to Troon and Ayr

South, Troon is 21 minutes from Saltcoats and known for its links golf, with Royal Troon among the best-known names on the coast. Our page on accommodation in Troon picks up from there.

Ayr is 29 minutes from Saltcoats. Stays near Ayr put you closer to Culzean Castle. Stevenston is 4 minutes away with a beach of its own, while Irvine is 14 minutes from Saltcoats if you want a larger town for shops. West Kilbride has its own page for a village base.

Arriving by air

Glasgow Airport, one of Scotland's main airports, is 36 minutes from Saltcoats, which makes for a short transfer after a flight.

When Should You Go?

Summer

The crossing is busiest in summer and on bank holiday weekends, so book those sailings early. A big group should settle its house early too.

Autumn to spring

Autumn and winter are quieter and the tub earns its keep on a cold evening. Spring is great for coastal walks around Saltcoats before the holiday crowds arrive.

Booking order

A Saltcoats holiday works best when the crossing and the house are sorted together. A comfortable bed and a hot tub are ideal after a long day on Arran. Book a golf course round if the group includes keen players. Then walk Saltcoats beach before dinner for the view across to Arran when the light is at its best.

Tip: if you're taking the car to Arran, book the ferry first, then pick the village that suits your sailing time.

Practical Tips Before You Book

Quick checks

  • Check the distance from each property to the shops, because accommodation Saltcoats searches also bring up places well outside town
  • Look at bedrooms and bathrooms together because they don't always match
  • Dog owners should use the pet filter and read each property page
  • Check beach rules on the North Ayrshire Council website before taking a dog onto the sand

You're welcome to head back up to the houses above, or see the full range on the Ayrshire cottages with hot tubs homepage.
