Why Stay Outside Town When You're Visiting Irvine?

Be clear about one thing from the start: none of the stays here is within walking distance of the centre. The nearest sits about 4 miles from the middle of Irvine. The furthest is around 8. That's a drive of ten to twenty minutes depending on the road. In return you get a house with a kitchen, a proper table and a hot tub to sit in once the day is done.

Hotel rooms are fine for one night. They're less fun for four.

If you're travelling as a family or with friends, a self catering house usually works out better than booking several rooms in a hotel in town. Everyone shares one living room and nobody queues for breakfast. You can cook what you like. The trade-off is simple: you'll want a car. Plan your evenings around driving rather than wandering to a pub.

What Does Accommodation Irvine Look Like Beyond the Hotels?

Search for hotels in Irvine and you'll mostly find a lodge-style hotel or a guest house. Those are handy for a single night, or for a golf trip with an early tee time. Our properties are the other side of the coin: whole houses that sleep from two up to a very large party. The price filter helps you compare value at a glance.

Here's how the areas around the town compare.

AreaMiles from Irvine centreGood to know
Crosshouse4.4Close to Kilmarnock
Kilwinning4.6Includes a house for a very big party
Dalry5.9 to 7.1Several houses in the same area, handy for two families travelling together
Ardrossan6.9Near a beach
Monkton7.6Close to Prestwick, takes dogs

Choosing a size

Sleeping space runs from a cosy house for two to one that sleeps a very big party. Use the sleeps and bedrooms filters above the cards rather than scrolling every house. Count the bathrooms if your group is a large one. Nobody enjoys queueing for the shower at eight in the morning.

Bringing the dog

Only some of the houses are pet friendly. Tick the dogs filter before you fall for a place. Then read the rules on the page itself.

  • Look at the drive from the house to Irvine centre or the harbour
  • Match bedrooms and bathrooms to your party
  • Use the dogs filter if a pet is coming
  • Ask about parking for every car
  • Ask the owner about arrival times if you land at the airport

Hotel, Guest House or Self Catering Cottage in Irvine?

Hotels in Irvine

Hotels in Irvine suit a single night. You get a room and a bed, often with a hotel restaurant downstairs. Hotels in Irvine keep you close to town, though not every one is in the centre. Golf is a big draw on this coast, so a hotel also works when you're only back to sleep.

Irvine guest house stays

An Irvine guest house is a welcoming way to see the town and works for a quick trip. What a guest house won't give you is a lounge for the whole family. Nor are you likely to find a hot tub under the stars.

Our self catering houses

A holiday cottage gives guests somewhere comfortable and spacious to relax. The facilities differ from one property to the next, so read what's listed on each page and choose the one that fits your group. Wifi is worth checking if you need it. Rooms, beds and parking vary a lot, so find the right one before you book. Then see what's available for your dates.

What's Near Irvine for a Short Break?

Start at the water. Irvine Harbourside is about 4 minutes by car from the centre. It's home to the Scottish Maritime Museum, where Scotland's national maritime collection is kept. The museum's own website has opening times and tickets, so look before you set off.

Just past the harbour mouth is Irvine Beach Park, a sandy seafront with views across Irvine Bay towards Arran. The views on a clear evening are worth the trip.

Inland, Eglinton Country Park is about 10 minutes from the centre. Walking trails run through the park around the ruins of Eglinton Castle, which makes it a good morning out before you head back to the hot tub.

Further afield, Troon is about 12 minutes away and is the place for a round of golf, with Royal Troon among the courses. Ayr is about 20 minutes and our Ayr accommodation page covers that end of the coast. Largs is about half an hour north. Largs accommodation picks up that stretch. If you'd rather be nearer the sea, Saltcoats and Ardrossan is worth a look, with West Kilbride further up the same coast.

When Is the Best Time to Go?

Summer gives you the longest evenings and the beach at its best. Spring and autumn are quieter, with cooler air that makes a hot tub feel even better. Winter is the time for a short break, when a comfortable house matters more than the weather.

If your dates are fixed and your party is large, it pays to look early rather than leave it to the last minute.

Practical Tips Before You Book

  • You'll want a car, as the houses all sit a few miles out of town.
  • Glasgow Prestwick Airport is about 18 minutes from the centre of Irvine by car.
  • Irvine station has trains to Glasgow and Ayr, though you'll still need a car to reach the houses.
  • Bring food for the first night so you can settle in.
  • Read each house's own page for its hot tub details before you book.
  • The price filter lets you set a budget before you narrow by size.

Tip: if you're driving to the harbour for an evening meal, decide who's driving back before you leave.

Our hot tub cottages in Ayrshire cover the whole county if Irvine doesn't quite fit. Whichever accommodation Irvine visitors end up choosing, the best advice is to match the house to the party first and the location second. Then sit back. You've earned the soak.
